CHALLENGE
WHAT IS IT ?

A CRYPTO CHALLENGE is a decryption competition combining CONTEMPORARY ART and CONTEMPORARY MATHEMATICS, designed by Swiss artist and mathematician Jean-Claude Bossel.

The concept is simple: carefully observe a painting, identify hidden messages, and attempt to decrypt them.

The only certainty ? The encryption was done using the ® CODE BACH process.

Everything else is yet to be discovered !

A challenge before diving in ?

Why not take a moment to observe a painting from the MOON I series?

For example, you might notice holes on the large golden disc placed at the center of the painting. Or perhaps the many small golden circles along the edges of the canvas.

You could also take the time to closely examine a painting from the INITIALS BB series.

Pay attention to the letter B, written in different orientations. Notice the small white circles scattered throughout. And observe the tiny holes on the mat board.

CRYPTO CHALLENGES are divided into three categories :

  • CRYPTO CHALLENGE 10K
    Difficulty : Medium
    Prize : CHF 10’000.– for the winner

  • CRYPTO CHALLENGE 100K
    Difficulty : High
    Prize : CHF 100’000.–

  • CRYPTO CHALLENGE 1M
    Difficulty : Very High
    Prize : CHF 1’000’000.–

Each CRYPTO CHALLENGE comes with a detailed set of rules outlining the conditions and validation criteria for the solution.

WHO ARE THE
CRYPTO CHALLENGES
FOR ?

CRYPTO CHALLENGES are open to anyone interested in exploring encryption applied to visual arts.

However, these challenges require a solid understanding of the fundamentals of contemporary mathematics applied to cryptology, as well as strong analytical and modeling skills.

CRYPTO CHALLENGES are therefore particularly suited for:

  • Those with a background in applied mathematics, cryptology, or theoretical computer science.

  • Specialists and experts in cryptography and decryption.

  • Analytical and curious minds capable of tackling complex cryptographic structures.

To participate and compete for the prize, follow these steps:

1.
ACCESS THE CRYPTO CHALLENGE
VIA THIS PAGE

  • Access to the CRYPTO CHALLENGE is free.

  • The competition is open to everyone, with no restrictions.

  • In case of victory, the winner’s identity must be verified.

  • If the winner is a minor, a specific procedure will be implemented to allow the prize to be transferred to an appropriate bank account.

2.
ANALYZE THE ENCRYPTED ARTWORK AND IDENTIFY THE UNDERLYING LOGIC

  • Mathematics, cryptology, intuition, and maybe a bit of luck.

  • Teamwork is allowed, but only one prize will be awarded per challenge.

3.
SUBMIT A SOLUTION BASED ON THE CRITERIA DEFINED IN THE CRYPTO CHALLENGE RULES

  • Each CRYPTO CHALLENGE follows specific criteria, written in French.

  • An English translation is provided for reference, but only the French version will be legally binding in case of dispute.

4.
THE FIRST CORRECT SOLUTION RECEIVED WINS THE PRIZE

  • Only one prize will be awarded.

  • In the highly unlikely event that two correct solutions are submitted at the exact same second (based on the system timestamp), the prize will be shared between the winners.
